Shakaylah Lashay Mathis was born on August 31st, 1994, in Leesburg, FL, to Cheryl Mathis and Darin Glover. From the very beginning, she was bold, beautiful, and unapologetically herself. Raised in the church, her faith was her foundation. She walked her own path with confidence, grace and just the right amount of sass.
An adventurer at heart, Shakaylah, lovingly known as Kaylah to her family and Kay to her friends, was always on the move, full of life, ready to travel. By the age of 30, she had earned her CDL and was out on the road delivering mail for the United States Postal Service. Her love for beauty and creativity led her to complete cosmetology school, where she honed her skills in hairstyling. And when it came to the kitchen, she could make pots jump like the best of them, filling every meal with love and flavor.
Shakaylah was a beloved daughter, sister, aunt, godmother, and friend. Her laughter was infectious, her words were blunt, and her spirit was unshakable. If something didn’t add up, you better believe she’d hit you with her signature line: “So, make it make sense!”
Shakaylah lived her life fully. One of the last things she shared was, “Every day I thank God that He made me different.” And if you knew Kay, you know how true that was. She embraced every part of who she was, and in doing so, she reminded the rest of us to do the same. And that’s exactly how we’ll remember her.
She was preceded in death by her great-grandparents, Emmitt and Willie Lee Lyles-Cody; grandfather, Raymond Mathis Sr.; and uncle, Raymond Mathis Jr. Her beloved grandfather, Johnnie Glover Sr. passed shortly after her.
Shakaylah is survived by her loving mother, Cheryl Mathis of Eustis, FL; father, Darin Glover (Marilyn) of Leesburg, FL; stepfather, Michael McCoy of Eustis, FL; sister, Deona Glover of Leesburg, FL; grandparents, Emily Cody-Mathis of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Willieva Glover of Cherry Lake, FL; uncles, Reginard (Freddie) Mathis of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Eric Mathis of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Johnnie Glover Jr. (Angela) of Cherry Lake, FL; aunt, Patricia Jenkins (Ted) of Lady Lake, FL; nephew DeMarius Duggs of Leesburg, FL; niece Jarreona Baggett of Leesburg, FL; goddaughter, Mar’Taeya Wofford of Ocala, FL; and a host of great-aunts, great-uncles, cousins and friends who will forever hold her memory close to their hearts.
