Nigel Eustace Murray was born in the parish of St. Mary, Jamaica. At the age of eight, he moved to Kentish in St. Catherine—an experience that would shape the rest of his life. It was well known to all who knew him that Nigel fell deeply in love with Kentish: its people, its hills and valleys, and the strong sense of community that surrounded him there. He spoke often and fondly of those years, describing his time in Kentish as the happiest period of his life.
In Kentish, Nigel formed lifelong bonds and became part of many families who embraced him as one of their own. He often spoke with affection and gratitude about the love and guidance he received from the community, including our patriarch Sylvester Oliver, affectionately known as “Mas Silly,” Cassandra Cohen, known as “Granny Kes,” Uncle Francis, and many others who nurtured, protected, and supported him as he grew.
Nigel often said that Kentish made him the man he became. It was also there that he met and fell in love with Kathleen Oliver, who blessed him with a son and a daughter.
To provide for his family, Nigel moved to Kingston, where he joined the police force. Mr. Murray proved to be a dedicated and hardworking officer. He was frequently commended for covering the most miles on foot patrol and for his commitment to serving the community. His dedication and performance led to his promotion to the rank of Detective.
Perhaps his strength and determination were evident long before his career began. As a young boy of just eight years old, Nigel courageously walked from St. Mary to St. Catherine on his own to reunite with his mother, Francella, and his siblings, Ivy, Lascel, and Aubrey. That same resilience and determination would continue to define his life and career as a successful police officer.
Later in life, Nigel moved to the United States and settled in Brooklyn, New York. During this time, he continued to grow his family and his legacy. With Rhea Duckworth, he was blessed with four children: Blueth, Leighton, Anthia, and David. Nigel was further blessed with another Son and daughter Dennis and Donna.
After many years in New York, Nigel retired to Orlando, Florida, where he lived a quiet and peaceful life surrounded by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Nigel was a man of few words, but his love spoke volumes. He had a generous heart and cared deeply for those around him. His presence, kindness, and quiet strength will be
remembered by all who knew and loved him.
He leaves to cherish his memory his six children: Norman, Karlene, Leighton, Anthia, David, and Donna.
He is also lovingly remembered by his 16 grandchildren: Venice, Nyasha, Attiya, Chad, Ayana, Asher, Ashanta, Leah, Candace, Mark, Alex, Sean, Hailey, Christie, Shawna and Rick and his 23 great-grandchildren, all of whom he loved deeply.
Nigel was predeceased by his beloved son and daughter, Dennis Murray and Blueth Murray.
Though he may no longer walk among us, Nigel Eustace Murray’s legacy of love, dedication, and quiet strength will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
