Hyacinth Icilma Bewry, known and loved by all as “Grace,” was born on April 9, 1956, in St. Andrews, Jamaica. Grace transitioned peacefully at home on December 30, 2025, resting in her bed, having completed her earthly journey with strength and dignity.
Grace was born to her late birth mother, Ruth Grant, and was lovingly raised by her late adopted mother, Lucille Gibbs-Lewis, both of whom went before her. From early, Grace showed she was a woman of strong mind and firm purpose. She was determined, outspoken, and not easily shaken. She carried herself with confidence and knew who she was.
A woman of firsts, Grace made history as the first female to graduate with a degree in Engineering from CAST in Jamaica, now the University of Technology (UTech). This achievement spoke volumes about her courage, intelligence, and perseverance. She did not wait for doors to open. She kicked them open herself, clearing the path for others to follow.
While working at Goodyear in Jamaica, Grace met her life partner, Heinsworth G. Bewry, whom she affectionately called “Benji.” They were married in July, 1982 and built a life grounded in love, honor, and shared determination. In later years, Grace and Ben left Connecticut, where they raised their children and made their home in Orlando, Florida, where they lived together for more than a decade, creating a place of warmth, laughter, and family.
Though trained as an engineer, Grace answered a higher calling in nursing, serving faithfully in the medical field for 30 years. She loved her patients and took pride in doing her work well. Grace was known to be firm, efficient, and deeply compassionate. She was an exceptional nurse and colleague. Many would say you were in good hands once Grace was on duty.
Grace was a no-nonsense woman. She was ambitious, hardworking, independent, and strong. She had a quick wit, a sharp sense of humor, and she loved to laugh. Though her outer shell was tough, those who truly knew Grace understood that her heart was soft, generous, and full of love. She was spicy, bold, adventurous, and fearless, yet deeply caring and loyal to her own.
As a mother, Grace was firm but intentional. She believed in raising children to stand on their own two feet. She taught the importance of hard work, discipline, dedication, and independence; lessons she lived out daily and passed on with purpose.
Grace found joy in both the simple and the lively; singing, dancing, gardening, working, and shopping. Music filled her spirit, especially the hymn “How Great Thou Art” and the song “I Hope You Dance,” reminders of her faith and her encouragement to live life fully and without fear.
Grace leaves to cherish her memory her devoted husband, Heinsworth “Ben” Bewry; her children, Omare Bewry, Karim Bewry and Alicia Bewry; and her bonus daughter, Vivette Bewry. She was a proud and loving grandmother to Giovanni, Alana, Arrielle, Aviya, Annalise, Ellarie, Alexander, Harmonie, and Zachary, each a blessing and a joy to her heart.
She is also survived by her sister, Beverly Zimba; her brother, Victor Clarke of Canada; nephews Dennis Locke, David Locke, Andrew Whyte, and George Whyte and a wide circle of nieces, nephews, relatives, and extended family near and far, too many to name, yet all remembered and held dear.
Grace was preceded in death by her mothers and other beloved family members who welcomed her home.
Grace lived strong, spoke her truth, laughed often, and loved deeply. She ran her race with endurance and finished well. Her life was one of purpose, service, resilience, and joy, a life we give thanks for and will forever celebrate.
2 Timothy 4:2 says, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” Walk good, Grace. Rest in eternal peace. Your work here is done.
