Gloria Wilson Obituary

Gloria Williams-Wilson, affectionately known as “Mum B”, was born on March 1, 1943, as the 5th child to Mortimer and Mihada Buchanan in the beautiful parish of St. Mary, Jamaica, West Indies.

She attended several schools, starting at the Highgate All Age School, and continued her passion for learning at a Practical Nursing School in Kingston, Jamaica.

She later met and married the late Ignatus Williams, and from that union came three sons — Ervine, Michael, and Peter. She was also a devoted foster parent, extending her care beyond her own children to others who needed her love.

Gloria was employed for many years as a head cook at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Kingston. Later, she moved to the United States of America, where she continued her life’s calling, serving with dedication and distinction as a Certified Nursing Assistant in several nursing institutions.

Being the eldest girl in our family of eight children, I was tasked with caring for my younger siblings, and that meant Gloria was under my watchful eyes in almost every aspect of her life. This role earned me the affectionate title “Lady B,” one I wore with pride, knowing I was helping to shape and guide my brothers and sisters.

One of my fondest memories was teaching Gloria the basics of reading — a skill she mastered very early. It was an experience she would fondly recall in later years whenever we spoke on the phone, bringing back laughter and warmth.

Gloria was a woman who paid attention to detail in everything she did. It showed in her work, her home, and even in her cooking. I remember the last time we spoke — she boasted about how delicious her fried fish was and promised to send me some. It was a promise made in love, even if life didn’t give us the chance to see it fulfilled.

She was forthright — never afraid to speak the truth, correct a wrong, or point out when a line had been crossed. But alongside that honesty was a pleasing personality that drew people to her.

When I began having children, she wanted to name them all — in her mind, they were as much hers as mine. Even in later years, when memory sometimes failed her, she would still ask for each one by name. That was Gloria — a loving sister, a devoted mother and enduring aunt, and a woman whose love for family never wavered.

She later remarried and is survived by her loving husband, Ruben Wilson; her sons Ervine, Michael, and Peter; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; 2 brothers Joslyn and Albert and sister Lady B; nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends who mourn her passing.

Today, we say goodbye to her earthly presence, but her kindness, her wit, her attention to detail, and her deep love for family will remain with us. Sleep peacefully, dear sister, until we meet again.
