Egbert “Papa” Aikens was born on May 9, 1929, in Rock River, Clarendon to Simeon Aikens and Irene Cameron. He was their first child born to his parents. He was called home to be with the Lord on January 10, 2022, at the age of 92.
Papa attended Mt. Zion Basic School, after which he started farming. In 1959 he met the love of his life, Diana Henry, and they were united in marriage on July 18, 1962. Papa was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He spent most of his life in Clarendon, Jamaica. In 1991, Egbert “Papa” Aikens migrated to the United States with his wife for a better life. In the U.S. Papa worked as a dishwasher at the Marriott Hotel, where he gained the respect of management and co-workers and received “Employee of the Year for 2 years in a row.” He enjoyed his work so much he was known as the Dishwasher-Taster for the Chef’s .
Egbert “Papa” Aikens loved and cherished his children, grandchildren, and other family members. Everyone who had the pleasure of being in the company of “Papa” left with a feeling of joining his family. Papa was preceded in death by his loving wife, Diana, on January 22, 2015 and also his lovely daughter, Icylin Rowe August 25, 2018. Among those left to cherish his memory are: his beloved children, Carol (Junior) Newland, Winston (Jennifer) Aikens, Verona (Alfred) Samuels, Trevor (Arlene) Aikens, Rose (Tubal) Shakes, Aleen (Evol) Loten, and Paul (Sherrine) Aikens. He was also blessed with 19 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and a host of other sorrowing family members and friends.
