It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Al Freddie Maxey, a cherished brother, uncle, and friend, who departed this life on December 5, 2024, at the age of 67. Al was born on August 2, 1957, in Orlando, Florida. He spent his early childhood in Zellwood, Florida, before moving with his family to Winter Garden, Florida. Al was a loving, generous, and funny man who always had a smile for anyone who crossed his path.
Al was preceded in death by his mother, Missionary Dorothy Horne, his father, Bishop Robert Horne, his niece, Yolanda Leath, and his grandniece, Yarviae Maxey. He is survived by his wife Naomi, brothers and sisters Julian Grubbs of El Paso, TX (Shelly), Roene Shaw of Winter Garden, Rickey Maxey of Lakeland, FL (Jackye), and Carvest Horne of Apopka, FL (Vivian). He is also survived by his daughter Anitra Maxey of Apopka; nieces and nephews Linda Maxey, Ceteria Leath, Taylore Maxey, Whitney Maxey, Michelle Curry, Jessica Johnson, Michael Norwood, Craig Willingham, and Julian L. Grubbs, as well as grandnieces Talandra Maxey, Kissie Maxey, Shalonda Maxey, and Dianca Maxey, and grandnephews Ya’Vall Leath, Jessie Hamilton, Shavonta Brown, and Jacarius Leath.
God and family were the two most important things in Al's life. He had a personal relationship with God and leaned on Him in both good times and bad. Raised in a Christian home, Al attended the church pastored by his father, Bishop Robert Horne, and where his mother, Missionary Dorothy Horne, served as the church Mother. It was in this nurturing environment that Al learned the power of God's loving grace and healing. At the time of his passing, he was a member of First John Holiness Church in Apopka, Florida.
From childhood, Al loved his family and cherished every opportunity to be with them. He brought joy and laughter to every family gathering, often with his legendary jokes that had everyone laughing until they cried. His comedic talent shone during one family reunion where he won first prize in a funniest joke competition. Al was also a wonderful cook and frequently took charge of preparing meals for family events. His culinary skills were widely praised during his time as the lead cook for the VA in Lake Nona, where employees and visitors raved about his meals. Al’s love for fishing was another source of joy, and he treasured time spent on the water with his brothers, regardless of whether they caught anything.
A proud Marine Corps veteran, Al was diagnosed as 100% service-related disabled. Despite his pain, he always sought to help others, especially those facing hard times. His resilience and generosity were a testament to his character.
Al’s favorite saying was, "God is good," a reflection of his enduring faith and gratitude. He made everyone around him feel loved and cherished, and his presence brought pure joy to all who knew him.
